What makes us human?

In an age defined by the ever-presence of technology, we are amplifying both the best and worst of our humanity.

The attention economy, on-demand everything, AI, metrics, data and optimization can and do work. But they also strip away the intangibles: the things that don't make sense, at least not in the short term.

Over the longer term, the absence of those hard-to-measure intangibles becomes obvious. We may learn to name them, or they may remain unknowable. Either way, our humanness feels faded. Conversations sap the life out of us. Health declines. Community vanishes and joy leaves.

There is no going back. The second step is growing wiser about how we use technology, rather than being used by it. The first is reclaiming the intangibles and the mystery, not just by asking questions and reflecting, but by going out, doing and living:

What has made us human.
